St. Mary's University College

St. Mary's University was established in 1998 under St. Mary's University General Educational Development PLC with its head office in Awassa and a branch in Addis Ababa.

It commenced its operations in the same year with 33 students in Awassa and 37 in Addis Ababa, studying in three departments (Departments of Accounting, Marketing, and Law).  Later the same year, 49 students joined the Dilla Branch, 90 kilometers from Awassa, which is found in the southern part of Ethiopia. In the last quarter of 1998, it admitted more than 300 students in Addis Ababa (Lideta Campus located opposite the Federal High Court) and 25 students in Dilla.

Envisaging the trend of development of the conventional mode of learning, the moved its head office to Addis Ababa, Lideta Campus, in 1999 and opened the Department of Secretarial Science and Office Management (SSOM). With a view to broaden its programs, the Department of Computer Science (initially offering diploma programs) was put in place in September 2000 and the degree program in Law was initiated for the first time in the same year.

Excluding the Distance Education Division, the University offers courses in ten departments organized under four faculties comprising the Faculties of Business, Law, Informatics and Education. These courses are run under two categories of programs i.e. the Regular Program (run during the day time) and the Extension Program (offered in the evening). Students are trained in the specified levels: the certificate, the diploma and the degree programs.

Campus Location

Mexico Campus

Most of the regular and extension programs are offered at Mexico Campus where, the Executive Vice President's office and the Academic V/President's and other offices of the faculties of Business, and Informatics are located. Moreover, various offices providing services to the student body are also housed in this campus.

Main Campus

The Main campus located 300 meters below the Federal Police Head quarters in Mexico square houses the School of Graduate Studies, the head quarters of the university and the college of open and distance learning.

The overall distance provision is coordinated and managed from the Main Campus where the College of Open and Distance Learning is located although there are currently more than 140 coordinating centers of distance education through out the country. This campus also houses the office of the President, the V/P for Open and Distance Learning,  the V/P for Business and Administration and the School of Graduate Studies.

Midir Babur Campus

The Midir Babur Campus is Located near the Main Campus and houses the Testing Center and the Material Distribution Center of the College of Open and Distance Learning.

Burayu Campus

The Burayu Campus rests on 20,000 m2 compound. The land has been acquired for housing the Institute of Agriculture and Development Studies. This future campus is 14 kms from the main campus.
